アメリカの詩人・ミュージシャン、Gil Scott-Heron（ギル・スコット・ヘロン）が27日（現地時間）、ニューヨークで亡くなりました。享年62歳。

このブログでは出来るだけ悲しい話題は避けようと思っていたのですが、今だからこそ彼のことを知っていただきたいと思い、書いています。


彼はソウル、R&B、ジャズ、ファンク、ラップなど幅広いジャンルの音楽を生み出し、現在のブラック・ミュージックに大きな影響を遺しているアーティストです。メッセージ性の高い楽曲も多く作り、「黒いボブ・ディラン」とも呼ばれました。

その代表作の一つがこの反核ソング、「We Almost Lost Detroit」。（1977年発売のアルバム「Bridges」収録）





ギルは1975年に出版された、原発事故を扱った本『We Almost Lost Detroit』を読み、同時期にシルクウッド事件（※1）のことを知ったそうです。原発問題の重要性を強く感じた彼は、自分の考えを皆と共有したくて、詩に、そして曲にしたと言います。


※1　シルクウッド事件
1946年生まれのアメリカ人女性カレン・シルクウッド。労働組合活動家で、核燃料プラントの科学技術者でもあった彼女は、発電所内の不正をアメリカ原子力委員会において証言。また、彼女自身がプルトニウムに汚染され健康被害を受けていることを知る。しかし公衆に向けて告発しようとしていた矢先に不審な死を遂げた。結果的にこの事件は原子力の危険性を世に知らしめることになった。


アメリカのスリーマイル島原発事故の直後、ギルは「Musicians United for Safe Energy」（安全エネルギーを求めて集ったミュージシャンのグループ）に参加します。そして事故から半年後の1979年9月、「No Nukes」という反原発コンサートに出演し、この曲を演奏したのです。

Gil Scott-Heron, an American poet and musician, died May 27 in New York.

I've been avoiding sad stories on this blog, but this time, I'm writing this hoping to share his messages with you.


Scott-Heron, born in Chicago, has been such an influential artist of R&B, soul, jazz, funk, blues, spoken words, etc. and known as Godfather of Rap. He was also called "The Black Bob Dylan" as he wrote many protest songs.

"We Almost Lost Detroit" is one of those songs. Scott-Heron read the book of the same title and at that time he gotto know about Karen Silkwood case. He came to realize how important it is to know about the nuclear issues and wrote the words, which turned into a song. It was recorded for his album "Bridges" (1977).

Gil joined in Musicians United for Safe Energy (MUSE) and performed this song at No Nukes concert held in Madison Square Garden in September 1979 -- 6 months after the Three Mile Island nuclear accident.
